SOCKS5 is the fifth version of the SOCKS protocol, a session-layer standard that forwards network traffic between client and destination without inspecting it. Where an HTTP proxy understands and rewrites web requests, a SOCKS5 proxy simply opens a tunnel and passes bytes — which means it carries any TCP-based protocol, supports remote DNS resolution so lookups happen at the exit, and authenticates with username and password. The result is a proxy that works with applications HTTP proxies can't handle.
For ordinary web scraping through libraries like requests or Scrapy, HTTP(S) proxying is fine and slightly simpler to debug. Choose SOCKS5 when the traffic isn't plain web requests: custom TCP clients, antidetect browser profiles that expect socks5://, tools that need remote DNS to avoid leaking lookups, or applications where you don't want a proxy layer touching headers at all.
